The fast bowler Poised for a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of taking part.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations around that, aside from the back issue, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Injury History

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the series.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
